When you cut the head off a spider, it dies. when you cut a starfish in two, it makes two starfish. When you cut a starfish up into many pieces, it makes many starfish.

Here's a quote about Occupy San Francisco from the article at (http://www.alternet.org/story/153849/occupy_san_francisco_takes_the_fight_to_local_banks_in_ambitious_next_step_for_movement/?page=1)

This quote describes this starfish phenomenon in the context of our Occupy movement:

"Solnit – who is the brother of San Francisco writer Rebecca Solnit – said that OccupySF Housing, a housing-related spinoff of the movement, had held marches in four neighborhoods and succeeded in saving four homes from foreclosure."

For more detail on the "Starfish Effect," see the book "The Starfish and the Spider: The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations" by Brafman and Beckstrom.
